Diabetes Control Needs Additional Attention, Study Warns

May 29, 2002

According to a Reuters Health story today, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) warned today that primary care physicians need to manage their patients' blood glucose levels much more aggressively if the global explosion in Type 2 diabetes prevalence is to be slowed. Many doctors are too complacent about the need for tight control of glucose levels, and this lack of motivation is being passed on to patients, according to the federation, an umbrella organization for 181 member associations.

"I would agree with the results of this study," said Dr. R. Keith Campbell, Associate Dean and Professor of Pharmacy at Washington State University. "In the U.S. we have an acute care system where it's difficult to provide adequate care to patients with chronic diseases. Patients need to be educated and motivated to take charge of their own diabetes and demand good care."

A member of the WSU pharmacy faculty for 34 years, Campbell is one of four diabetes experts in the U.S. to be recognized with a Boehringer Mannheim/The Zitter Group "Diabetes Disease Management Leadership Award" for his impact on the care of diabetes patients. A diabetic himself for 52 years and four months, Campbell is the longest continuous user of an insulin pump in the world and has published over 500 articles on diabetes. His research focuses on new products and devices that are used to treat patients with diabetes.

In addition to his awards, Campbell has also been named a consultant to the endocrine branch of the federal Food and Drug Administration. For more information, contact Campbell, 509.335.1548, rkcamp@wsu.edu.
