WSU Faculty Author Book on Diabetes Medications

Two Washington State University faculty members have taken an in-depth look at medications used to treat both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in their new book published by the American Diabetes Association.
Authors R. Keith Campbell and John White have written a 190-page book, Medications for the Treatment of Diabetes, the first of its kind.
"There are no other books out there that really focus on the medications used to treat diabetes," Campbell said. "Much of the information available to physicians is given to them by the pharmaceutical manufacturers. This book is a balanced view of the medications with studies referenced."
The book's references on newer medications also should prove helpful to the medical community.
"Many new medications used in the management of diabetes have been introduced in the past few years," White added.
The book is intended primarily for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dieticians and other health care providers. However, diabetes patients who want to learn about the medications they are using may also find it useful, the authors said.
It includes a chapter on the medications used to treat diabetes patients who have high blood pressure and another on meds used to treat hyperlipidemia. Another chapter explains the new medications that may be available in the future.

Campbell and White are the authors of numerous articles on diabetes and are frequent speakers on the subject at professional conferences.
Campbell is one of the country's foremost authorities on diabetes education. He is a consultant to six major pharmaceutical manufacturers and former host of "Ask Your Pharmacist," a national radio talk show. The pharmacy professor is also associate dean at the WSU College of Pharmacy in Pullman, where he has been a faculty member for 33 years.
White has been extensively involved in the field of diabetes since 1987. He is the author of a 17-chapter textbook on diabetes and has written numerous manuscripts and done extensive research in the field. He serves on the editorial board of the American Diabetes Association's journal, Clinical Diabetes. White is an associate professor, a certified physician's assistant and the primary health care provider at the Indian Health Service Clinic at Wellpinit.
Two other WSU faculty members also contributed to the book: Daniel E. Baker and Lance K. Campbell, the author's son.
