Research Summary

Dr. Preston’s research has focused extensively upon nuclear and biological weapons proliferation, bioterrorism, leadership analysis, and foreign policy decision making. In the security field, his new book, ‘From Lambs to Lions’: Nuclear and Biological Weapons Proliferation and Their Impact Upon Interstate Security Relationships, focuses upon the changing nature of existing security relationships caused by spreading WMD capabilities to both state and non-state (terrorist) actors over the coming decades (and the challenges this will poses for crisis management and response). Examples of his work in foreign policy decision making and leadership analysis include his book, The President and His Inner Circle: Leadership Style and the Advisory Process in Foreign Affairs (2001, Columbia University Press) which focused upon six modern American presidents and examined how their personalities and leadership styles fundamentally shaped their advisory systems and foreign policy decision making during their administrations. He also recently co-authored a textbook, Introduction to Political Psychology (2004, Erlbaum) and has written numerous refereed journal articles and book chapters on presidential leadership, advisory relations, bureaucratic politics, and foreign policy analysis.
