Research Focus

Stephen Setter is a member of the WSU Geriatrics Research Team which investigates health problems found in older adults, including diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. He is interested in the pharmaceutical care of older adults living at home from both a practice and clinical perspective. This includes examining drug related issues, neuropsychiatric disorders, and Type 2 diabetes in these individuals. In this capacity he also serves as a clinical pharmacy consultant for Elder Services/Visiting Nurses Association of Spokane.

Dr. Setter has reviewed the impact of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in older adults and has written for professional journals on prescribing safer NSAIDs. Special projects he is involved with include teaching about and providing pharmaceutical care in an ambulatory geriatric setting and participating in a citywide effort to decrease NSAID-related gastrointestinal disease in older adults.

Currently Dr. Setter serves on the board of the Visiting Nurses Association of Spokane and is a consultant to the Parkinson’s Regional Center of Spokane and to the NW Inland Alzheimer’s Association. He has lectured and published extensively on numerous pharmacological topics, particularly geriatric pharmacy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and managing diabetes and its complications. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the professional journals Clinical Therapeutics, Postgraduate Medicine, Clinical Neuropharmacology, and the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.
