Stephen Setter, assistant professor of pharmacotherapy at Washington State University Spokane, has recently achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status from the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.
Dr. Setter is the lead investigator in a Spokane public health awareness and research project aimed at reducing gastrointestinal bleeding in seniors who take common over-the-counter pain medications. The WSU Spokane faculty member is a licensed pharmacist in Washington and obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from WSU in 1996. He received WSU Spokane's 1999 Faculty Excellence award.
Dr. Setter was also president of the Spokane Pharmacists Association in 2000, and is one of only 400 certified geriatric pharmacists in the nation. According to the NCBDE, candidates for the designation must devote themselves to rigorous education and professional practice experiments in order to be eligible to take the examination. The NCBDE describes achievement of CDE status as a demonstration to patients and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting the quality of care for patients with diabetes.
NCBDE, established in 1986, is dedicated to promoting excellence in the field of diabetes education through the development, maintenance, and protection of the Certified Diabetes Educator credential and the certification process.
