Stephen M. Setter, a Washington State University pharmacy professor who specializes in caring for the elderly, has been named the Pharmacist of the Year by the Washington State Pharmacists Association board of directors. The WSPA is one of two statewide professional pharmacy organizations in Washington.

The award recognizes "a pharmacist who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy and the work of the WSPA during the past year."

In addition to his job as assistant professor of pharmacy practice at WSU Spokane, Dr. Setter took on the responsibility of research director for the new Spokane Regional Parkinson’s Center when it opened in January. He now works there one day a week, but has also continued to work several days each week giving in-home patient care to seniors through Elder Services, a division of Spokane Community Health.

Dr. Setter also is the lead investigator in a public health awareness and research project in Spokane aimed at reducing gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers in seniors who take such common over-the-counter medications as ibuprofen, aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents.

In addition to being recognized by his pharmacy peers, Dr. Setter also has recently received high honors from his teaching colleagues and students at WSU, receiving WSU Spokane’s 1999 Faculty Excellence.

Dr. Setter was president of the Spokane Pharmacists Association in 2000. He is a licensed pharmacist in Washington and obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from WSU in 1996. He also has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, which he earned from Michigan State University in 1986.
