Stephen M. Setter, assistant professor of pharmacy at Washington State University Spokane, recently became one of only 10 Certified Geriatric Pharmacists in the state of Washington. There are approximately 400 pharmacists throughout the entire United States and Canada who have successfully completed the test offered by the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy.
Due to multiple medications and biological changes of aging, people over age 65 are extremely vulnerable to medication-related problems. Certified Geriatric Pharmacists have demonstrated skills and knowledge in geriatric pharmaceutical care and are better prepared to advise this population on drug therapy needs.
"I believe that the elder population is often a forgotten and horribly mistreated population in regard to appropriate and safe treatment of the many chronic conditions they live with on a daily basis," Dr. Setter says." This certification helps to identify me as a clinical pharmacist that possesses a specialized knowledge, skills, and training in the unique needs of the geriatric patient."
Dr. Setter’s research focuses on the treatment and prevention of disease states often encountered in older patients. He is the lead investigator in a Spokane community project aimed at reducing gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers in the elderly caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen.
